  1. 1998 Horsehide A-2 is DURABLE Review by Paul
    Quality
    Price
    Value

I ordered my Russet Horsehide A-2 from Shaul back in 1998. It is not perfect in that the epaulets are a bit too wide and the shoulder seam is directly over my shoulder which places the epaulets too far forward. Also, back in those days, a Scovill Gripper zipper was used. It's a great, durable zipper and works perfectly to this day, but doesn't quite look the part. It does seem that these issues have been addressed in current stock.

The jacket itself is super high quality in construction and materials and fits perfectly still. Of course, after all this time (pushing 18 years as I type this) the leather is fully broken in and supple with all kinds of wrinkling and graining depending on panel thickness and the part of the jacket the panels are located. The various hide parts are quite inconsistent which I actually like. It gives the jacket character and makes it more authentic.

The cotton liner was a dark brown color, not the lighter, orangey color of today's versions. It has since faded into a nice tobacco brown shade. It does have some small tears in it around the neck and waist, but I don't what to replace it yet due to the nice fade it now has.

The knits have held up nicely. There are some very tiny holes on the inside rear of the waist knit; I think it must have snagged something on occasion.

Shaul confirmed the hide is chrome tanned and the top coat is super durable. I've worn this jacket in the rain multiple times. In fact, it's the jacket I wear when I know it's going to rain. No problems. It remains supple as always. I've not treated the leather in any way and simply clean it with a damp towel.

I may have the epaulets made more narrow and moved rearward over the should seam (some vintage contracts were like that) just to satisfy my nitpickiness. A more accurate-looking zipper mod wouldn't hurt either, but the stock Scovill is still perfect serviceable.

In summary, this is the best jacket I've ever owned. (Posted on 1/12/2017)

  2. High Quality, great service! Review by AWESOME!!!!

I was in the market for an A-2 jacket for reenactments and almost went the "really cheap" route. I am so glad I didn't. This jacket is amazing quality and the service was absolutely great. This jacket is such high quality, comfortable, and looks great that I wear it all the time. I added the 101st patch and my own personal leather name tape as part of the order and they look great. I also added my own 506th patch above the left pocket and it looks perfect. Thank you all so much and I couldn't recommend this company any higher. (Posted on 1/4/2017)

  4. Super Customer Service Review by BvT

I ordered the goatskin A2 around 5pm on the day before Thanksgiving and wore it on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (Yes, two days if you don't count the holiday). The leather is supple and of higher quality than my much more expensive USAF-issued A2 (current model, issued in 2009). The fit of the jacket is superb. It's not the baggy jacket that you usually find on-line, but it's also a little more forgiving than the tight, original WW2 A2.

Backing up, I wasn't sure which size to order so I called. The rep answered the phone on the second ring and with a couple of questions put me in the right jacket. I highly recommend this company. (Posted on 11/28/2016)

  7. Custom A2 Vintage Goatskin Review by Rob W

The jacket I received exceeded my expectations. The fit is spot on and the attention to detail is second to none. Not a hanging thread to be found and the stich work is crisp. The leather is absolutely beautiful. I had considered the horse, but I am glad I went with the goat, the weight and thickness is perfect for an all-around jacket. The vintage finish is rich and gorgeous. Exactly the shade that I wanted. Communication with Shaul was timely and very helpful. Thank you again Shaul for providing me with something I can treasure for years to come. (Posted on 10/31/2016)

  8. Outstanding product with amazing customer service Review by Chris in VT

I had originally purchased a russet horse hide A-2 in a size 46R based on a suit coat that I had. When it arrived literally two days after ordering, it was clear that it was two large for me (I am short and fat). After a phone call with Shaul and a few emails back and forth, I sent the coat back with a cheap A-2 that I had that fit well in length, sleeves and shoulders and sent in a chest measurement. With-in a week I received an amazing custom A-2 that fits like a glove. Being horse hide it is taking a bit longer to break in than a softer leather, but I have already received a number of compliments on the jacket. I love this thing and can not recommend Shaul or his company enough!! (Posted on 10/18/2016)

I chose a vintage horsehide in a custom A-2 jacket with very exacting measurements. The jacket was completed in less than two days and I received it a few days later. Quite simply, everything was perfect to include the stitching, fit, leather, and communications with Shaul. I will definitely order more custom jackets in the future. (Posted on 8/10/2016)
